The Twigs and Skates

The twigs also known as hockey sticks determine how fast and where you want to put your shot. There are many different flexes on sticks it starts at youth which is around a 40 flex stick and goes up to around a senior stick which is around a 1oo flex. In the old days a stick was made out of solid wood. Although it was very heavy, there is a plus side to having a wood stick. You could put any kind of curve you wanted on it. All you had to do was take a torch and heat up the blade and curve it to your liking. Today sticks are made out of a composite material. It is sometimes coated with a fiberglass outline. I am pretty sure there are only a few NHL player s that still use wood sticks. One of those guys is Jason Spezza. He plays on the Ottawa Senators.

Lets talk about the boots or the skates. Skates are a big reason why players are a lot faster than they used to be. The skates in the old days used to be big heavy pieces of equipment. Players were still fast but not as fast as they could be. Today skates are a few pounds lighter. That may not seem that much. Trust me it is.

Recently there has been a recall of some Nike Bauer hockey sticks. You can send these sticks in to Bauer and get some brand new sticks.

I had an old Bauer One75 stick that I used for street hockey and I sent that in. I got 173.00$ towards a new Bauer or Nike Bauer hockey stick. They did this because they found a low but still lethal amount of lead in the paint used on those sticks.

Goalie sticks are much different than Player sticks. Goalie sticks have a paddle in the middle of the stick that goes all the way down to the blade. This was put in so the goalie can out the stick flat on the ice and the puck can not squeeze through.
Goalies also jave a different design in the skate. They are not as tall and have a plastic coating around them for protection. This can protect from the hardest of shots.
